Other Sheriff Supported Groups
The Altadena Sheriff sponsors a number of other volunteer groups that support their work in the community.
Volunteers on Patrol
The Volunteers on Patrol, or VOP, is made up of community members who assist our local Sheriff's station deputies by acting as an extra set of eyes and ears.
VOPs have a specially designated vehicle which is used for patrolling. On patrols, VOPs do home vacation checks, report suspicious activity, help with traffic control, assist with community events and other activities assigned by Station personnel. VOPs do not enforce laws but report to the station suspicious activity.
VOPPING is a way for people to learn about their local Sheriff's station and personnel as well as helping to keep our Altadena safe.

The Posse
The Altadena Mounted Posse (Company Number 7) is the historic and oldest equestrian unit in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Consisting of reserve deputies, civilian volunteers, and sworn personnel, the posse actively assists the department with trail patrols, natural disaster evacuations, and community engagement.
Sheriff's Explorers
The Deputy Explorer Program is a career development and education program, open to mature young adults between the ages of 14-20, who have an interest in the law enforcement profession.
Its purpose is to provide training and experiences that assist young adults in maturing, becoming more responsible, compassionate, independent, and self-confidence, while serving as a volunteer in their communities.
Altadena Mountain Rescue
Established in 1951, it is the oldest organization of its kind in Los Angeles County. The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team is a 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to saving lives through mountain rescue and safety education. It has been a member unit of the Sheriff's Department Reserve Forces Bureau since 1956.
CERT
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, run by the Altadena Sheriff’s Station in Altadena, educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may occur where they live.
CERT trains volunteers in basic disaster response skills, such as normal home fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and simple disaster medical operations.
The CERT program offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.
